Thomas (TJ) Lyons Honored as Recipient of the 2023 Bill McIntyre Leadership Award
Dallas, TX, November 13, 2023—Thomas (TJ) Lyons, safety consultant with Lyonetics Safety, was announced as the recipient of the 2023 Bill McIntyre Leadership Award today at the International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI), Construction Risk Conference (CRC).
Sponsored by Travelers, this award recognizes visionary leaders who demonstrate a commitment to construction risk management through creativity, service, mentoring, and education. The award is named for IRMI Executive Chairman Bill McIntyre, who has inspired, trained, and educated thousands of risk professionals and is a passionate advocate of construction risk management and safety.
Mr. Lyons has over 36 years of experience executing innovative and practical approaches to safety on environmental and construction projects, with the majority of his career working with two of the largest general construction contractors in the United States. He is the only person who has received all three prestigious awards presented annually at IRMI CRC: the Bill McIntyre Leadership Award, the Gary E. Bird Horizon Award, and the Words of Wisdom Award.
A recognized expert in the area of prevention through design, he is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) accredited by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). He is also a board-certified Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), accredited by the BCSP, and a Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS®), certified by IRMI. He recently retired from the industry, but the initiatives he championed—such as “Ladders Last,” “Nothing Hits the Ground,” prevention through design, and suicide prevention—will continue to save lives throughout the world for years to come.
“TJ hits on all cylinders,” noted Jennifer Lee, vice president, national practice lead, loss sensitive and wrap-up, construction, Travelers. “From his long-term commitment and leadership in the betterment of construction risk management to his creativity providing solutions to common loss causes and tirelessly sharing his ideas and solutions with everyone to his deep penetration within all aspects of this industry to communicate and educate to ultimately better this industry, all with a seemingly selfless focus on helping others, he exemplifies all of the award criteria.”
“TJ’s love for his craft is matched by his desire to share what he has learned,” added Jack Gibson, president and CEO at IRMI. “He has been a tireless advocate—both here and abroad—for safety initiatives that are proven to save lives and livelihoods.”
