Steve McElhiney, MBA, MS, CPCU, ARe

Mr. McElhiney is vice chairman and chief commercial officer at Piko Labs AI, where he helps advance artificial intelligence-driven solutions for the captive insurance industry. He works with captive owners and stakeholders to accelerate innovation through data modernization, AI-enabled technologies, and alternative reinsurance solutions designed to improve operational efficiency and strategic decision-making.

Prior to joining Piko Labs AI, Mr. McElhiney was a partner at Augment Risk, where he led the firm's captive and alternative risk transfer solutions division. Earlier, he served as senior vice president and global director of reinsurance at Artex Risk Solutions. His career spans more than 2 decades in captive insurance, reinsurance, corporate finance, and risk financing. He has held senior leadership positions with global insurers, reinsurers, intermediaries, and captive insurers, including Allianz, Transamerica, Argo Group, and Overseas Partners Re. He has also served as chief financial officer, chief risk officer, corporate treasurer, president, and board member, including leadership of a Fortune 500 single-parent captive.

Mr. McElhiney holds a master of business administration (MBA) degree in corporate finance, a master of science (MS) degree in global supply chain management, and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Southern California. He also holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designations. In recognition of his contributions to the industry, he was inducted into the Captive Review Hall of Fame in 2021.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. McElhiney remains active in the insurance industry. He is a former chairman of the Captive Insurance Companies Association, former chairman of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association, and former president and chairman of the CPCU Society. He also serves on advisory boards for the risk management and global supply chain programs at the University of Southern California.
