Robert L. Carson, Jr., CPCU, ARM
Mr. Carson wrote "An Energy Exploration and Production Overview," "Insurance and Indemnity Provisions in the Mineral Lease," and "Insurance and Indemnity Provisions in the Farmout Agreement." Prior to his passing in July 2016, Mr. Carson was vice president in the energy division of Higginbotham & Associates, a Fort Worth, Texas, insurance brokerage firm. In addition to being an insurance broker, Mr. Carson provided insurance consulting services and served as an expert witness. His fields of expertise included risk allocation in oilfield contracts; well control, general liability, excess liability, platform, and related insurance policies for the energy industry; well control claims; and oilfield liability and property losses.
Mr. Carson began his insurance career in the early 1960s. In 1970, he began specializing in the energy industry, attending the University of Texas' Petex drilling schools and the University of Oklahoma's Well Control School. In 1971, he wrote Lloyds of London's first well control policy, covering the cost of redrilling a well after a blowout. Later, he added other coverages that today are standards in well control policies, such as care, custody, and control; priority of payments; and evacuation expense coverage. During the 1980s, Mr. Carson was involved in handling numerous well control, platform, and liability losses in the United States, Canada, Gulf of Mexico, South America, Egypt, and the Pacific Rim. From 1981 to 1985, he served on the board of directors of a Denver oil company that was listed on the American Stock Exchange. Mr. Carson spoke frequently to energy industry, insurance industry, and legal groups. He held a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
