Mr. Wilson is the founder and CEO of Insurance Commentary.com, where he blogs about insurance industry issues. He is the author of six books, including two insurance books, When Words Collide: Resolving Insurance Coverage and Claims Disputes and 20/20 Vision: Why Insurance Doesn't Cover the COVID-19 Pandemic. His latest book is Presentation Skills for the "Unprofessional" Speaker, based on his 5 decades of public speaking experience and the keynote presentations he delivers in conjunction with his consulting practice.
Mr. Wilson served as associate vice president of education and research at the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA) for over 17 years until his retirement in 2016. While at IIABA, he was the founder and director of the Big "I" Virtual University. He also previously served at Insurance Services Office, Inc., prior to being named director of education and technical affairs for the Insurors of Tennessee. He has been a licensed insurance and surplus lines agent.
Mr. Wilson's professional affiliations include past president of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU), Past Most Loyal Gander of the Honorable Order of Blue Goose, International, and chairman of the Tennessee Insurance Commissioner's Education Advisory Committee. He has also been a member of the following organizations: board of directors of the national CPCU Society, IIABA National Education Committee, Certified Insurance Service Representative National Advisory Committee, Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators (SITE) and its SITE Journal editorial committee, National Underwriter FC&S Bulletins advisory committee, National Writers Association, Middle Tennessee State University Insurance Liaison Committee, and Nashville Community College's Business Management Advisory Committee. He is currently a member of the American Association of Insurance Management Consultants.
Mr. Wilson has served as a trainer and speaker for various organizations, including the IIABA and 46 of its state affiliates, CPCU Society national convention and chapter programs, National Association of Insurance Women, Southern Agents Conference, Risk & Insurance Managers Society, IRMI, National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, and Society of Risk Management Consultants.
Mr. Wilson has conducted hundreds of technical seminars, workshops, and convention presentations throughout the US, as well as programs on time management, presentation and public speaking skills, seminar development, and many others. He has been the top-rated presenter at several CPCU national conventions, and his programs are always highly rated by attendees. He has presented seminars or webinars to as many as 5,000 attendees in a single session.
Mr. Wilson was the recipient of the IIABA L.P. McCord National Education Award for having the No. 1 ranked state insurance education program in America and has won six other national education awards, including the George M. Gottheimer Memorial Award, which is presented periodically to a CPCU Society member who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of insurance education, risk management, or insurance consulting, and, most recently, the Jeff Yates Lifetime Achievement Award, which is the IIABA's highest honor for nonagents. He was a 2020 inductee into the Tennessee Insurance Hall of Fame.
Mr. Wilson has researched, developed, written, and published dozens of technical materials and has authored articles in business and industry trade periodicals such as Presentations, American Agent & Broker, Independent Agent, Tennessee Insuror, and Tennessee Business magazines, as well as National Underwriter, CPCU Journal, CPCU interest group newsletters, and the SITE Journal. He contributes columns to Insurance Journal and state agent associations in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
Mr. Wilson has been quoted as an expert in a number of mainstream publications, including Reader's Digest, Kiplinger's, and Money magazines and the Wall Street Journal, and he has been cited as an expert resource/interviewee for local media outlets. He has also served as an expert witness in litigation and currently contracts with a large regional agency group for technical advice to its members.

Mr. Wilson earned a bachelor of science degree in fire protection and safety engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. In addition to CPCU, he earned the Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Associate in Management (AIM), and Associate in Automation Management (AAM) designations.
