Public Officials and Police Insurance Coverage Analyses Updated in Professional Liability Insurance

This Professional Liability Insurance release also features a refurbishing of two insurance coverage discussions in the public entity section. More specifically, the public officials and police professional liability coverage analyses have been updated to reflect newer policy wording, along with a number of coverage enhancements that have been added within the past several years.

As is the case with other lines of professional liability coverage, public entity risks have been increasingly offering a "packaged" approach in recent years. Thus, police and public officials professional liability policies are frequently offered in combination with employment practices liability, fiduciary, and, to a lesser extent, cyber and privacy insurance coverages.

The past 5 years have witnessed a number of coverage innovations in police and public officials policies, including increased availability of defense in addition to policy limits/first-dollar defense coverage, separate insuring agreements for defense coverage, and a broad array of supplementary insuring agreements (e.g., public relations and crisis management expense, E-discovery cost coverage, and coverage of legal expenses necessitated by state licensing and regulatory boards).
