Pastoral Professional Liability Insurance Coverage Discussion Added to PLI

Churches and other types of religious institutions face unique liability exposures that call for tailored professional liability insurance coverage. This Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) release adds a new section addressing how pastoral professional liability insurance coverage can address exposures from "pastoral counseling" activities.

Pastoral counseling liability exposures can be addressed with a variety of insurance coverage formats, including stand-alone pastoral professional liability policy forms, comprehensive endorsements to commercial general liability (CGL) insurance policies, and other minor revisions to CGL policy wording. This new section discusses various details of these differing approaches and how they may vary from one another.

Also covered is the American Association of Insurance Services' Pastoral Counseling Professional Liability Endorsement, which is a standardized option that insureds may have available for endorsement to their CGL policies.

This section details several of the most important coverage features of pastoral professional liability insurance policies (with a focus on terms that are typically available in a stand-alone format). Limits of insurance, retentions, insuring agreements, "counseling services" definitions, exclusions, and "Who Is an Insured" provisions are all analyzed with respect to the nuances most relevant to this particular exposure.
