work hardening

Definition

An interdisciplinary program utilized to return an injured individual to work. Although a major thrust of the process is a physical therapy program that utilizes work simulation, elements of occupational therapy, vocational rehabilitation, and psychological evaluation are included to specifically tailor a program for the injured individual. The goals of work hardening are to return the individual to work and to prevent future injury.
