respite care

Respite care is temporary care provided in a nursing home, hospice inpatient facility, or hospital to allow a family member or friend who is the patient's caregiver time to rest or take time off.

This term also encompasses short-term care covered in the hospice benefit provided under Medicare Part A. For Medicare to cover, respite care must be provided in a Medicare-approved facility, such as a hospice inpatient facility, hospital, or nursing home.
