Respite Care

Respite Care —

(1) Temporary care provided in a nursing home, hospice inpatient facility, or hospital to allow a family member or friend who is the patient's caregiver time to rest or take time off. (2) Short-term care covered in the hospice benefit provided under Medicare Part A.

Respite care provided to the hospice patient relieves the caregiver (usually a family member). For Medicare to cover, respite care must be provided in a Medicare-approved facility, such as a hospice inpatient facility, hospital, or nursing home.
