Robert Whelan

Bob Whelan writes on risk financing issues for Expert Commentary. He is the founder and principal of Whelan Risk Solutions, LLC, an independent risk management and insurance advisory firm. With more than 20 years of experience spanning claims, brokerage, in-house risk management, and consulting, he brings an enterprise perspective to the design and execution of risk and insurance programs across industries, including sports and entertainment, real estate, utilities, education, manufacturing, distribution, and health care. Mr. Whelan advises organizations across the full risk financing spectrum—from traditional insurance structures to complex retention and alternative risk strategies.

He holds a bachelor's degree and a master of business administration from Thomas More University; maintains several professional designations, including Senior Claims Law Associate and Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist; and is a past board member of the Society of Risk Management Consultants. He has also served in civic leadership roles, including as commissioner of the Kenton County Planning Commission and as chairman of the Board of Adjustment for the City of Erlanger, Kentucky. Mr. Whelan is a licensed insurance consultant in multiple states and a frequent writer on commercial insurance and risk management topics.
