Dr. Nathan Gould contributes to the Catastrophe Risk Management column for IRMI.com Expert Commentary.
He is a licensed professional and structural engineer with 30 years of experience in structural, seismic, extreme wind, progressive collapse, and antiterrorism/force-protection analysis and design for commercial, medical, and industrial facilities. Dr. Gould currently serves as a senior technical director for ABS Consulting, where he specializes in performance-based seismic and extreme wind design methodologies for new construction and the retrofit of existing structures and nonstructural elements. He has performed natural hazard risk assessments for numerous industrial and commercial facilities worldwide.
Dr. Gould has authored numerous technical papers on performance-based design, seismic evaluation and retrofit of nonstructural elements, multihazard design for facility resilience, probable maximum loss assessments, extreme wind loss management, and antiterrorism/force protection design. He has participated in several postearthquake reconnaissance missions, including the investigations of damage following the 2010 Haiti and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.
He has served on numerous technical committees, including the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program Advisory Committee on Earthquake Hazards Reduction and the Advisory Committee on Structural Safety of Department of Veterans Affairs Facilities.
