Nick Nierengarten, JD

Attorney

Mr. Nierengarten served on the CGL Reporter Editorial Board in 2014–2017, focusing primarily on general liability and professional liability insurance issues.

Mr. Nierengarten is a principal with the law firm of Gray Plant Mooty, practicing out of its Minneapolis office. For over 30 years, he has counseled insureds on a broad array of coverage matters, including policy interpretation, risk transfer strategies, negotiation of coverage with insurers, claims processing, and resolution of third-party claims against the policyholder. He also represents policyholders in coverage litigation and frequently monitors litigation in which the insured is being defended under a reservation of rights or there is the potential for uninsured exposure.

Mr. Nierengarten, a fellow in the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel and a long-time member of the Tort, Trial & Insurance Practice Section, is a frequent lecturer and author on insurance coverage matters. He has a proven track record representing business clients in a wide variety of commercial disputes and regulatory proceedings, including class actions, environmental, intellectual property, toxic torts, trade secrets, construction defects, creditor's rights, and contract claims in addition to insurance counseling and litigation. This diverse background is brought to bear in his analysis of insurance coverage issues.

Mr. Nierengarten graduated Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota and received his juris doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota. He is licensed to practice in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as admitted to practice in the US District Court for Minnesota and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
