2013 Gary E. Bird Horizon Award Bestowed on Team from Duininck, Inc.

San Diego, CA, November 18, 2013—The Gary E. Bird Horizon Award was presented at the 33rd IRMI Construction Risk Conference to the Duininck, Inc., team of Rick Maursetter, Risk Manager; Lynn Skordahl, RN Wellness Coordinator; and Cindy Vander Well, Benefits Manager. The honor recognized the team for its innovative employee wellness program.

The Duininck team created and implemented the award-winning "A Corporate Wellness Program" to impact employee wellness, productivity, workers compensation, and medical costs but most importantly to improve the health and well-being of the company’s employees and their families. The Gary E. Bird Horizon Award, sponsored by Travelers, is presented annually by IRMI to recognize a demonstrated commitment to improving construction risk management through the implementation of innovative, cost-effective, and efficient risk management techniques.

Rick Keegan, President, Travelers Construction, said, "This risk management approach is very innovative and addresses one of the more significant issues for contractors and the industry, and one that will continue to create cost and productivity challenges as the workforce continues to age."

The other finalists for the award were Robert Herbein, Sr. Vice President of Corporate Services, on behalf of the American Infrastructure Risk Management Department; Nocona Schulz, Corporate Insurance Director, on behalf of the Clayco Inc. Risk Management Department; Carole Fried, Corporate Director, Health and Safety, of Gilbane; and Hendrik van Brenk, Chief Environmental, Health, and Safety Officer, of Skanska USA Inc.
