The MLIS Certification Establishes Credibility and Competence

The Management Liability Insurance Specialist (MLIS®) continuing education (CE) program was developed by IRMI to make it much easier for in-house risk managers or insurance buyers, and their insurance agents or brokers to gain specialized expertise in the fundamentals of professional liability insurance and the more specific nuances of directors and officers liability, employment practices liability, and fiduciary liability exposures and insurance. These specialized lines of insurance are often called "management liability" or "executive liability" insurance, hence the name of the program. Obtaining the MLIS certification will increase the competence, confidence, and credibility of the risk managers who purchase these lines of insurance, and insurance professionals who sell them. Risk managers or insurance buyers who obtain the certification will gain the knowledge to assure that the assets of their organizations and personal assets of the directors and officers are properly protected, and when buying insurance from an MLIS designee will know he or she is dealing with someone who is committed to staying abreast of this complex and constantly changing insurance specialty.

The MLIS Curriculum and the Continuing Education Requirement

The MLIS program consists of a two-part curriculum that was designed specifically for risk managers, and their insurance agents or brokers. Part 1 is comprised of three basic- to intermediate-level courses that cover the fundamentals of all types of professional, E&O, and D&O liability insurance. Part 2 consists of four courses that focus on the specific nuances of directors and officers liability, employment practices liability, and fiduciary liability exposures and insurance. Completing the seven-course curriculum qualifies an individual to use the MLIS certification for 24 months. To maintain the certification, the MLIS certification-holder must complete only 3 hours of approved professional or management liability insurance continuing education credit during the initial 24 months and every 12 months thereafter. This requirement can be satisfied through just one additional online CE course or by attending approved seminars and conferences held by IRMI or other organizations.
