Quality Indicator Profile (QIP)
A two-page report prepared by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(CMS), which is used by the federal government to monitor the level of patient
care in federally funded nursing homes. Underwriters of long-term care (LTC)
liability insurance also rely on the QIP as a key factor in making pricing and
coverage decisions. The factors reflected in a QIP include the prevalence of
falls by residents in past 30 days and incidence of new bone fractures in the
past 30 days. The key number found within a QIP is the facility's percentile
rank, which can range from 1 to 99. This number indicates how the LTC facility
compares to other LTC facilities in the same administrative region. The higher
the percentile ranking, the greater the probability the LTC facility is having
difficulty in delivering high-quality patient care.
