outplacement services
Services afforded by organizations specializing in assisting recently-terminated
workers in securing employment. These services include resume and cover letter
writing assistance, guidance in contacting suitable employers, and offering
career direction. In some instances, corporations pay for outplacement services
as a part of an overall severance package offered to its former employees. One
advantage of such services, from the former employer's perspective, is that
they could reduce the time period required for the worker to find suitable
employment, a fact that can lower the amount of damages recoverable in a potential
wrongful termination claim or even prevent the filing of such a claim.
