offshore captive
The basic dichotomy in captive domicile selection is onshore versus offshore.
As the name implies, offshore captives are domiciled off the shores of the United
States. Insurance regulation in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, for example,
is generally considered more flexible and reporting requirements less
stringent than onshore. With the development of more captive-friendly onshore
domiciles, however, this difference is becoming less distinct.
