employment-at-will doctrine
A legal doctrine holding that, absent a contract for a specified duration,
both employers and employees are free to terminate the employment relationship
at any time, with or without cause, and with or without notice. In recent years,
however, both courts and legislatures have developed a number of exceptions
to this doctrine, a factor largely responsible for a marked increase in claims
alleging wrongful termination.
