Jeff Thompson contributes articles on
intellectual property
law to IRMI.com.
Mr. Thompson is a partner in the firm of Meagher & Geer, which has offices
in Minneapolis and Scottsdale, Arizona. Mr. Thompson concentrates his practice
in the areas of intellectual property litigation and commercial litigation (including
insurance coverage disputes), though his practice is unusually diverse in this
day of the "one dimensional man" (with apologies to Marcuse). He is the chair-elect
of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section
of the American Bar Association and is on the Law Improvement Committee of the
Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association.
Mr. Thompson graduated from Michigan State University's James Madison College
in 1983 and the Notre Dame Law School, cum laude,
in 1986, where he also served on the law review. After a clerkship with the
Honorable James L. Ryan, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, he left
his home in Michigan in search of the perfect climate: working first with Carrington,
Coleman in Dallas and later with Latham & Watkins in Orange County, California.
He discovered the delightful land of Minnesota with the help of his wife, Margaret,
a native Minnesotan, where he has a practice that is national in scope, and
the winter deposition schedule usually has a distinct Southern flair.
Mr. Thompson is an active member of the Minnesota, Texas, and California
bars, as well the American Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in the
federal courts of Minnesota, California, Texas, and Arizona and before the federal
courts of appeal for the Eighth and Ninth Circuits. He has handled many high-profile
cases, including several that have led to published decisions.
