Mr. Lake is one of the presenters for Workshop M4, “Improving Performance
by Engaging Employees,” on Monday. For more than 23 years, safety
professional Troy Lake has been helping craft employees take personal
responsibility for their own safety while helping supervisors and managers
understand how to influence the behavior of those around them.
He began his career as a carpenter helper for a large construction
company with a vision of being in the safety field and helping people avoid
preventable accidents. In the early 1980s, safety positions were hard to
come by. After becoming a supervisor and completing numerous training and
educational courses, he was given an opportunity and thus began the task of
making that vision a reality.
Mr. Lake has been with Cajun Constructors, Inc. for more than 17 years
and is currently the safety manager over all industrial operations. His
experience comes mainly from the industrial (refinery, chemical and power
distribution) construction industry. He is responsible for managing risk
associated with heavy construction while ensuring that the level of training
needed to recognize and reduce such risk is maintained.
Mr. Lake has spearheaded a variety of sustainable health and safety
programs including S.T.A.R.T. (Supervisor Training in Accident Reduction
Techniques), Hazard Recognition, Near-miss Reporting, Incident Investigation
with Potential Index, Flexibility Stretching, New Hire Mentoring, Pre Job
Hazard Analysis, H.A.T. (Hazard Awareness Training), and numerous training
and qualification programs. He assisted the ABC (Associated Builders and
Contractors) with the development of craft skills assessments in the late
1990s and sits on numerous boards and committees.
