Rebuilding the World Trade Center: A Case Study in Safety and Risk
Management
Watch a preview.
The rebuilding of the World Trade Center complex is perhaps one of the
most unique construction projects of our time. The risks associated with
executing an exceptionally high-profile $20 billion project, in a highly
congested area and on what is widely considered hallowed ground, are equally
unique. Using footage from the “America Rebuilds” documentary, this session
will demonstrate the challenges associated with the design and construction
of the new World Trade Center office towers, transportation hub, and
memorial, as well as some of the financing and political challenges of the
project. A panel of risk management professionals representing the project
owner, contractor, and key insurance providers will draw from the video
footage to describe the challenges encountered in ensuring the safety of
future occupants, construction workers, and the general public, as well as
the enormous challenge of assembling the insurance for the project. Although
this project is unique is size and scope, many of the risk management
lessons can be applied across all types of construction projects.
