Catastrophist


Dr. Gordon Woo is a catastrophist, specializing in mathematical aspects of catastrophe insurance risk modeling. Since 9/11, he has focused on developing a quantitative framework for modeling terrorism risk and is the chief architect of the risk management solutions terrorism model. His work on terrorism has been publicized widely in periodicals ranging from the Wall Street Journal to Newsweek. He has written widely on terrorism and is the author of the book Calculating Catastrophe, written for the tenth anniversary of 9/11. He has testified on terrorism risk to Congress and has lectured to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Centre of Excellence for the Defence against Terrorism in Ankara, Turkey, and International Atomic Energy Agency. Raised in England, the son of a Chinese diplomat, Dr. Woo is a top mathematics graduate of Cambridge University. He completed his doctor of philosophy as a Kennedy Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard University Society of Fellows. He is currently an adjunct professor at Nanyang Technology University, Singapore, as well as a visiting professor at University College London.
