SAN DIEGO—Tim Carter, a five-time IRMI Construction Risk Conference speaker and crowd favorite, was honored with IRMI’s 2002 Words of Wisdom Award here recently. The Words of Wisdom—or WOW—Award recognizes a speaker who has made an outstanding contribution to the annual Conference, which International Risk Management Institute, Inc., has hosted for 22 years.

The award was presented to Mr. Carter, who is director of Safety for Fluor Global Construction, before a record-breaking 1,240 IRMI Construction Risk Conference attendees.

"Being able to share this recognition with such a distinguished group of prior recipients is an incredible honor,” Mr. Carter said. "This award is very humbling since there are so many other talented and capable speakers who so willingly share their knowledge at the IRMI Conferences year after year, all of them making each Conference so successful.”

IRMI president Jack Gibson explained why Mr. Carter is an appropriate choice for the prestigious award.

"He was selected for this honor for being such an outstanding presenter as to be rated in the top 5 percent of all speakers at the last four Conferences,” Mr. Gibson said. "Since there are 50 or more speakers for each Conference, this is quite an accomplishment.”

"We attribute the success we have experienced with this Conference to a number of factors, but without question, one of the most important is the quality of the presentations made by our guest speakers,” Mr. Gibson said. "We created the Words of Wisdom Award to recognize the substantial contributions these individuals have made to the construction and insurance industries.”

At the IRMI Construction Risk Conference, Mr. Carter’s topics have been related to safety and loss control. His 17-year tenure with Fluor and his 25 years in the safety and health field make him well qualified to address the issues this industry faces. His experience is also diverse—his background in occupational safety and health began in the mining industry and later expanded into construction. He has been involved with several operations and projects that are among some of the most challenging and unique in the world. He has been involved with numerous construction projects in Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, most of which were associated with major mining operations in the Andes at elevations in excess of 14,000 feet above sea level.

Mr. Carter is the thirteenth winner of the WOW Award. Previous recipients include John Alberici, senior vice president of Alberici Group; James H. Costner, senior vice president with Willis Property Resource Group; Steven D. Davis, director, McGriff Seibels & Williams; Mr. Gibson; Gerald I. Katz, partner, Katz & Stone; Steven A. LaShier, executive vice president, Business Benefits P/C, Inc.; Michael C. Loulakis, Shareholder, Wickwire Gavin, P.C.; Jeffrey D. Masters, partner, Cox, Castle & Nicholson, LLP; Thomas H. McCarley, executive vice president, Palmer & Cay; Michael J. O’Neill, president, ACIG Insurance Agency, Inc.; William H. Perkins, instructor, Florida Association of Insurance Agents; and Richard J. Shamis, managing director—Construction Team leader, Willis. The IRMI Construction Risk Conference is the only national symposium devoted exclusively to insuring, bonding, and managing the risks of construction projects.
