NEW ORLEANS - Nine hundred and
fifty-five construction risk managers, insurance brokers, underwriters,
and other risk professionals attended the 21st IRMI Construction Risk
Conference here this week. Sponsored by International Risk Management
Institute, Inc. (IRMI), the Conference involved four full-day seminars,
two general sessions, and 15 breakout sessions that were presented by
45 nationally recognized insurance, risk management, and surety experts.
"There was a consensus among the participants that the insurance
marketplace would continue firming as a result of the insurance industry's
financial setbacks in 2000 and earlier 2001 which would be exacerbated
by the events of September 11," said Jack Gibson, IRMI's president.
In addition to the firming insurance and surety bond marketplaces, some
of the biggest issues for the group were continuing problems with construction
defect claims and insurance coverage, including mold; inequities in
contractual risk transfer activities; and how to manage the risks of
design-build projects.
"Attendance was down only 9 percent from last year in spite of the
events of September 11 and, while everyone was certainly more somber
than in the past, the participants seem to be ready to get back to business.
I think this is a good sign for our industry and our nation," said Gibson.
The IRMI Construction Risk Conference is the only national symposium
devoted exclusively to insuring, bonding, and managing the risks of
construction projects. The 22nd IRMI Construction Risk Conference will
be held November 11 - 14, 2002 in San Diego. For information concerning
