DALLAS—International Risk
Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI), is pleased to announce a second
edition of its book Design-Build Risk
and Insurance, which explains how to avoid pitfalls in
design-build construction through appropriate coverage and superior
risk management.
With the growing popularity of design-build, it is becoming more
and more important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of
this construction delivery method. Although design-build offers many
advantages, including a central point of control and responsibility,
fast-tracking opportunities, and ability to obtain design options
from multiple design professionals, it also creates new risk for
participants.
“Design-build projects present a myriad of new risks,” said Ann
Hickman, contributing author and editor of the book. “Contractors
who act as design-builders must be on top of issues such as design
liability, performance guarantees, professional licensing
requirements, ownership of design documents, and a variety of other
risks that they do not typically face in traditional construction.
Failure to recognize and plan for these risks can be devastating to
a contractor.”
Design-Build Risk and Insurance,
2nd ed., includes nine chapters that cover a variety of topics,
including introduction to design-build construction, risk
identification, contractual risk transfer, caselaw in design-build
claims, coverage for design-build risks in standard policies,
architects and engineers E&O insurance, contractors professional
liability insurance, project-specific professional liability
insurance, and surety in design-build.
Additionally, Design-Build Risk and
Insurance, 2nd ed., is being used as the text for an online
continuing education course within the Construction Risk and
Insurance Specialist (CRIS) educational program. Completers of the
CRIS course can receive insurance CE credit as well as CRIS
reaccreditation credit.
